Vol. 194 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grading of Potatoes.

27.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the serious need which exists for the provision of regulations to bring about some grading system for the sale of potatoes at the Dublin vegetable markets; and, if such a system is feasible, if he will consider its introduction.

Under the Agricultural Produce (Potatoes) Act, 1931, wholesalers or growers who are licensed as potato exporters can have ware potatoes for sale on the home market graded, and the sacks sealed, by my Department's inspectors under the same conditions as apply to ware potatoes for export. The enforcement of a compulsory grading scheme for the home market would be difficult and costly to administer, and it is very questionable whether the results would justify it.
