Vol. 194 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Production of Military Aircraft by Potez Company.

34.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has seen the reference to a military aircraft produced by Potez Limited, called the Potez Hunter 191, which is designed for military liaison use, presumably by NATO; and whether it will be permissible for Potez (Ireland) Limited to produce such aircraft in either of their factories, whatever may be their present declared intentions.

I have seen the newspaper reports referred to. The programme of manufacture planned at present is that which has already appeared in published reports and the future manufacturing activities of the company will at all times be subject to the laws of this country.

Would the laws of this country prevent the Potez Company from manufacturing an aircraft such as the Potez Heinkel 191? May I draw the attention of the House to the fact that the name is Potez Heinkel, not "Hunter" as on the Order Paper?

We have laws about controlling the manufacture of firearms, etc., which I take it would be part of military aircraft, and we have also the Control of Manufactures Act which operates in certain circumstances.

We have the right of control?

I am not certain of that but for every plane they would make for NATO, I could ask them to make one for the Warsaw Pact.
