Vol. 194 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Forestry Development.

56.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is the intention of the Forestry Division of his Department to carry out a forestry development scheme in the Mulranny-Currane-Achill Island area of County Mayo in the near future.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to a question on 21st February, 1962, the Achill area is considered to be generally unsuitable for forestry development because of severe exposure to Atlantic gales. The Mulranny-Currane area on the mainland opposite Achill is considered to be unsuitable for the same reason.

Would the Minister be good enough to make inquiries and to let this House know how it happens that in that area excellent trees always grow on the lands of Englishmen and foreigners and do not grow on the land owned by Irish people?

I can only give the Deputy the expert technical advice that I received and I can only surmise that the planted areas may be kinder to foreigners than to natives.

I presume they have not been sown: that is all.
