Vol. 194 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Council of Education.

68.

asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the work done by the Council of Education during the past year; whether the Council is at present engaged on examining any particular aspect of Irish education; and, if so, at approximately what date is it expected that it will report any such examination.

69.

asked the Minister for Education the names and qualifications of the present members of the Council of Education, the number of meetings which the Council held in each of the years 1958-59, 1959-60, 1960-61, and up to the present in 1961-62; and at what date the Council produced their last report.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions 68 and 69 together.

The position in relation to the Council of Education is: The Council submitted in June, 1954, a report on the curriculum of the primary school.

In November, 1960, it submitted its report on the curriculum of the secondary school. I understand that the latter report is likely to be released by the printers within the next fortnight. In view of there having been as yet no opportunity for that report to be considered by the interested parties and in view also of the fact that at the moment there is a Commission examining all facets of higher education, I feel that it would not be appropriate for the present to give a further remit to the Council of Education.

Again with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate the remainder of the reply in the form of a statement to be included with the Official Report.

In April, 1960, the Minister for Education reappointed for a further five-year period of office all the members who were serving on the Council of Education up to that date. They were:
