asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of Gardaí of each rank at present stationed in the Dublin Metropolitan area; and the number of these Gardaí in each rank who are capable of conducting their business through Irish.

The total strength of the Dublin Metropolitan Division on 1st April, 1962, was 1,779 and included—

58Station Sergeants

222Sergeants

1,446Gardaí

It is not possible to give precise particulars of the number of these who are capable of conducting their business through Irish. The only statistics available in this respect relate to those who have passed an Irish Proficiency Test conducted by the Civil Service Commissioners and the total number of such members is 613, comprising:

27Station Sergeants

112Sergeants

455Gardaí.
