Vol. 194 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cinema Entertainments Duty.

91.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the loss which the revenue would have suffered by a reduction of (a) 10 per cent., (b) 20 per cent. and (c) 33? per cent. in the entertainments duty for cinemas in the years 1960/61 and 1961/62 respectively on the basis that it is (a) the first year in which such alteration was made, (b) the second year and (c) a year in which the full effect of the alteration was felt.

The following statement gives the information requested:—

Year ended 31st March

Estimated loss of revenue which would have resulted from reduction in entertainments duty on cinemas of:—

10%

20%

33?%

NOTES:

(1) The question does not indicate from what date the hypothetical reductions would have applied. The above figures are based on the assumption that the reductions operated for a full year in each case.

(2) Some entertainments duty is paid by means of adhesive stamps sold at Post Offices and it is not possible to say exactly what proportion of such receipts is attributable to cinemas. The figures in the above table, therefore, include an estimated apportionment of these receipts.
