Vol. 195 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Health Expenditure.

15.

asked the Minister for Health how much of the total local authority expenditure on health will in the present financial year be devoted towards the payment of salaries and wages; and what percentage this sum is of the total.

It is estimated that in the current financial year the amount of the salaries and wages of staffs of health authorities will be £10,200,000, which represents 49.8 per cent. of the estimated total expenditure towards which grant from the Health Vote will be payable.

16.

asked the Minister for Health how much of the total local authority health expenditure on salaries and wages is devoted to the payment of (a) medical staff (b) nursing staff and (c) administrative and other lay staff.

Local authority health expenditure on salaries and wages in respect of the year 1962/63 is estimated as follows:—

(a) Medical

£2,110,000

(b) Nursing

£4,560,000

(c) Other Staff

£3,530,000

The figure quoted for other staff includes all health expenditure recorded by the local authorities on salaries of staff other than purely medical and nursing, e.g., it includes salaries of para-medical and para-nursing staffs (such as dentists, physiotherapists, radiographers, pharmacists, health inspectors) and domestic and trades staffs as well as administrative and clerical grades. Precise information as to the expenditure under each of these heads is not at present available in my Department but I am taking steps to have it procured.
