Vol. 195 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Suir Drainage.

38.

asked the Minister for Finance when the survey of the River Suir started; when it is likely to be concluded; and when it is hoped to have the work on the drainage of the river started.

The engineering survey of the River Suir and its tributaries was commenced on 1st June, 1960. The catchment which comprises about 870,000 acres, is the largest so far tackled and the survey can hardly be completed before 1964 or even 1965. After that, a further period of years will be required for the preparation of a detailed scheme and compliance with the requirements of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. We hope to be able to start works about 1970, but at this stage and in a proposal of this size, I cannot make this a definite commitment.
