asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of companies to which licences or permits have been issued to prospect, test or exploit mineral deposits within the State since 1st January 1957, the counties in which they have been permitted to operate, the dates of approval to operate in the case of each company, the number of persons employed at the latest date for which this information is conveniently available, the royalties charged and paid in each case, and the number of companies which have ceased to operate in each county since permission to commence operations was first granted.

As the information requested by the Deputy involves tabular lists, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate a statement with the Official Report.
Following is the statement:
1. The principal particulars requested by the Deputy, so far as they relate to the period up to the 31st December, 1961, will be found in the half-yearly reports which have been laid before the House in accordance with the provisions of Section 77 of the Minerals Development Act, 1940.
2. Particulars are not available which would enable the total number of persons employed by the companies to whom the mining facilities in question have been granted to be stated.
3. The number of companies and/ or individuals which has ceased to operate in each county since permission to commence operations was first granted during the period since 1st January, 1957, is as follows:—

Apart from licences etc. already issued, notice has been published in the period up to and including 2nd May, 1962 of the intention to grant prospecting licences to 12 companies and/or individuals in respect of areas in Counties Clare, Cork, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Offaly and Sligo. As at 2nd May, 1962 none of these licences had actually been issued.
