Vol. 195 No. 2

Order of Business.

On the Order of Business——

We have not got it yet.

I understand that, under Standing Orders, I am entitled to raise a matter at the commencement——

We shall have the Order of Business first.

Business, as set out on the order Paper, will be taken in the following order: Nos. 2 and 3 and, in 3, Votes 54 and 55. If not already reached, it is proposed to interrupt business between 1 and 3 p.m. to take No. 3 and to resume the order after Questions. Questions will be taken, as usual, at 3 p.m.

I want to move the adjournment of the House for the purpose of discussing the bus strike; the hardship being suffered by the people thereby; the need for the Dáil to censure the Chairman of C.I.E. for his policy of instant dismissal which precipitated this situation and the need to protect the citizens from any such further display of irresponsibility by Mr. Andrews.

That is not the motion of which the Deputy gave me a copy.

Even so, surely I am entitled to amend the motion; am I not entitled to amend it?

I want the motion read out which was handed to me.

I shall read out that motion, too. The motion which I handed in last night reads as follows:

I request leave to move the adjournment of the Dáil for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent public importance under Standing Order 29, namely, the necessity for the Government to take immediate steps, in the public interest, to bring together the parties in the present bus strike in Dublin in order to put an end to the severe hardship being suffered by the bususing citizens of the City and County, in view of the fact that the settlement of the dispute appears to be outside of the ordinary methods of negotiation, and that the dispute constitutes a major emergency for half a million people and involves considerable loss of earnings for many.

Now, Sir——

I have to rule on the motion handed in by the Deputy.

Am I not entitled to amend that motion?

I am dealing with the motion given to me and on which I propose to give the House my ruling——

Am I not entitled to amend the motion and to put a further motion?

The Deputy will resume his seat.

I refuse to do so, on this issue. Obviously, an effort is being made to stifle this discussion.

Deputy Seán Dunne will resume his seat.

Deputy Seán Dunne will leave the House.

There is no option left but for me to name the Deputy for gross disobedience to the Chair. I am constrained to name the Deputy in accordance with Standing Orders.
