Vol. 195 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Television Licence Fee.

36.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if it is correct that a collection fee or commission of £1 for the Post Office is included in the television licence fee of £4; and, if so, what expenses are incurred by the Post Office in connection with the collection of such licence fees.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is "no". The Broadcasting Authority is paid a grant equivalent to the total of the receipts from radio and television licence fees less expenses of collection and any expenses on prevention of interference with radio and television reception incurred by the Post Office. In 1962/63 it is expected that these expenses will amount to £145,000 as compared with gross receipts of £1,020,000 from licence fees. The principal collection coasts are in connection with sales of licences, records, reminders, inspections and postage.

What is that?— about 12½ per cent?

It is 5/2d., approximately, per licence.
