Vol. 195 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - OAS Base in Ireland.

56.

asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention has been drawn to reports of the 22nd April that the French illegal organisation known as the OAS intended to set up an organisational base in this country; whether to his knowledge there is any basis for such reports; whether any such action by the OAS has come to the knowledge of the Special Branch or any other Government Department or agency; and whether he intends to take any steps to prevent such an organisational base being set up here.

The reports in question deal with what are alleged to have been the secret plans of a foreign organisation and there has been no suggestion, to my knowledge, that any steps had been taken to give effect in this country to any such plan. Accordingly, I do not consider that the matter calls for any comment from me.

That was not the reason why the gendarmerie arrived here?

No. There is no connection. The arrival of the gendarmerie was to give concrete expression to the friendly relations that exist between France and ourselves.

And to teach the police how to behave.
