Vol. 195 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Common Market: Incentives to Industry.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether his attention has been drawn to the statement of Professor Ludwig Erhard on 29th April in which he condemned government subsidies to individual industries and other protective means to counter tariff reductions; and whether he considers that, in view of Dr. Erhard's statement, any of this country's present incentives to industry and tax reliefs for exports are likely to be disallowed under Common Market conditions.

I have seen reports of the statement. In advance of the examination of our aids and incentives by the Commission of the European Economic Community in accordance with the procedures provided for in the Rome Treaty, it would not be possible to say whether any of these would be deemed incompatible with the Common Market. I refer the Deputy to paragraph 63 of the White Paper on the European Economic Community in which the provisions of the Treaty in relation to such State aids are summarised.

Question No. 2 postponed.
