Vol. 195 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allotment of Mayo Holding.

26.

asked the Minister for Lands the valuations of the successful allottees (and whether they are married or not) in the allotment of the holding of Flannery of Lisatava, County Mayo; and if he will give similar particulars regarding those within one mile of the holding who got no allotment, or those on the applicants list, whichever is available.

The rateable valuation of lands held by allottees of the 58 acre holding referred to ranged from £5 13s. to £11 15s. Two of the allottees were married; three were widows and three were unmarried.

The rateable valuation of unsuccessful applicants within a mile of the divided lands ranged from 16/- to £50. Of these, 26 were married, 13 were widows and 13 were unmarried.

Could the Minister say why two applicants, one of whom has a valuation of £4 10s. and the other a valuation of £7 10s., were not considered? They are young men.

All I can say is that the Land Commission, in their wisdom and within the limits, dealt with those with whom they could deal considering the amount of land available. I am informed that they gave it to the most suitable persons.

One man had a valuation of only £4 10s. and had no other means of livelihood. That cannot be said about some of the successfull applicants. It seems strange that he was not considered and that he did not get anything.

The fact in this case is the same as in many other cases within the limits. There were only 58 acres to be distributed between all those people and the Land Commission did the best they could considering the location and the applicants within these limits.
