asked the Minister for Education the total number of recognised secondary schools for girls, including secondary co-educational schools; and the number of (a) girls schools and (b) co-educational schools which presented girl candidates for (i) the full mathematics course in the Intermediate Certificate and (ii) the honours mathematics course in the Leaving Certificate in each of the years 1930, 1935, 1940, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961.
Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary Girl Schools.
There are 254 recognised secondary girl schools and 65 recognised secondary mixed schools in the present school-year 1961-2.
It is not the practice of my Department to classify entries at the Certificate Examinations in accordance with categories of schools and the time and labour involved in extracting the information in the form in which it is requested would not be justified. I propose, however, with the permission of An Ceann Comhairle to circulate with the Official Report a tabular statement showing the number of girls presenting for Mathematics (full course) at the Intermediate Certificate Examination and Honours Mathematics at the Leaving Certificate Examination in each of the years mentioned in the question.
Following is the statement:
