Vol. 195 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remission of Rates.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the serious difficulties being experienced by house-purchasers residing in fringe areas of Dublin by reason of the high rates level in Dublin county; and that large numbers of such house-purchasers are facing increasing costs for the keep, clothing and education of their children; and if in view of the hardship caused to such house-purchasers he will introduce a new scheme of rates remission with allowances and reductions up to the eighteenth year of tenancy, that is, for the duration of the period during which such parents face the major economic problems of family-rearing.

The rate remissions on new dwelling houses granted under existing legislation are considered to be as generous as can be afforded by rating authorities and by the general body of ratepayers. The introduction of amending legislation to give remission on the lines suggested by the Deputy is not intended.
