Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Balrothery (Dublin) School: Traffic Dangers.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the traffic danger in which the children attending Balrothery national school, Balbriggan, County Dublin are placed by reason of the fact that they must cross the main DublinBelfast road to board the after-school bus; and that representations made to CIE and the Garda authorities to secure the elimination of this hazard have produced no results; and if in view of the anxiety of the parents of young children concerned he will take such steps as are necessary to secure a speedy solution to this question.

It is a matter for the local authority concerned and the Garda Síochána to deal with a particular traffic problem of this kind. The local authority can carry out any road improvement or ancillary works required. They have, I understand, erected warnings signs and a barrier at the school exit, and also have plans for road re-alignment under consideration. Further, with the consent of the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána they may appoint traffic wardens. The Garda for their part can control traffic at such points, but of course have to take account of the personnel available to them. While I for my part issue general advice and directions to local authorities in road and traffic matters, I cannot direct them what to do in particular instances.
