Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Subsidies for Irish Language Publications.

48.

asked the Minister for Education if he will furnish the names of all concerns which have been paid State subsidies in respect of the publication of books in the Irish language; and the total sums paid to each of these publishers in respect of all years up to 31st March 1962.

The information is given in the form of a tabular statement which with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

The total sums paid out of State funds in respect of the publication of books in the Irish language by independent publishers since the scheme was established 10 years ago up to 31st March, 1962 (inclusive), were as follows:

31,029 (54 books)

To An Clóchomhar Teoranta

6,748 (9 books)

To Cló Morainn

6,418 (12 books)

To Foilseacháin Náisiúnta Teoranta

6,035 (11 books)

To Cló Uí Mhéara

4,924 (10 books)

To F.Á.S.

3,444 (14 books)

To Preas Talbóideach

894 (3 books)

To Cumann Gaelach Eaglais na hÉireann

480 (1 book)

To Comhlucht Oideachais na hÉireann Teo.

391 (1 book)

To Foilseacháin na Scol

262 (1 book)

49.

asked the Minister for Education whether it is a fact that the total annual subsidy paid to Inniu is more than twice the paid-up capital of the Glún na Bua controlled public company, Foilseacháin Náisiúnta, Teoranta, the printers of Inniu.

The answer is in the affirmative.

50.

asked the Minister for Education the total amount paid in respect of all years up to 31st March 1962 to (a) Glún na Bua, 29 Lower O'Connell Street, Dublin as State subsidy (i) for its paper Inniu and (ii) in respect of the publication of books in the Irish language, (b) the printers of Inniu and the Glún na Bua controlled public company, Foilseacháin Náisiúnta, Teoranta, in respect of the publication of books in the Irish language, and (c) Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, 29 Lower O'Connell Street, Dublin in respect of State subsidies.

The figures requested by the Deputy are as follows:

(a) (i)

£99,378 Os. Od.

(a) (ii)

Nil

(b)

£6,035 Os. 11d.

(c)

£170,681 16s. 6d.

The figure I have given in reply to (c) represents the total of grants paid to Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge out of State funds in respect of all its various activities.

51.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any comment to make on the fact that at the annual general meeting of Foilseacháin Náisiúnta, Teoranta on 23rd February 1962 the chairman of the board of directors stated in regard to State-subsidised works in the Irish language that this was profitable work which should give a good return as experience in this area increased; and whether he considers that the payment of State subsidies to this public profit-earning company is in the circumstances proper and justifiable.

I am not aware of the statement to which the Deputy refers. The company in question has received State grants, through Bord na Leabhar Gaeilge, in respect of the publication of books in Irish and I am satisfied that all the conditions relating to each such payment have been fulfilled by the company.
