Vol. 195 No. 10

Adjournment Debate. - Tullamore Housing Applicant.

In question No. 27 on the Order Paper yesterday, I asked the Minister for Local Government:

If he will undertake a special investigation into the failure of the local authority to provide a house for an applicant (name supplied) in Tullamore, in view of the fact that the applicant was recommended for tenancy of a vacant house by the local health inspector and County MOH; and if he will ascertain under what circumstances these recommendations were not more favourably considered.

In his reply, the Minister stated:

The letting of local authority houses and the determination of the order of preference in the selection of tenants are functions of the housing authority concerned and I do not propose to undertake a special investigation into this case.

I want at the outset to assure the Minister that I am raising this matter tonight for the purpose of bringing home to his mind the seriousness of the situation in so far as this household is concerned.

On a point of order, would I be in order in inquiring if a House is necessary for a debate of this nature?

It is desirable, anyway.

I assure the Chair that I am not pressing for a House.

We must concern ourselves with order.

In order to facilitate, if they wish to leave, I am not pressing for a House.

Notice taken that 20 Members were not present; House counted, and 20 Members not being present,

I trust the Chair will give me some extra time in view of the fact that it is rather difficult to obtain a House at this time of the night.

Five minutes have gone and in the absence of a quorum, I must adjourn the House until 10.30 a.m. tomorrow.

Only one member of the Government Party present.

Will you, Sir, consider granting me permission to raise this matter on the Adjournment next Tuesday?

The Deputy must give notice on Tuesday.

I certainly shall.

The Ceann Comhairle adjourned the Dáil at 10.35 p.m., without question put, until 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, 24th May, pursuant to Standing Order 19.
