Vol. 195 No. 10

Written Answer. - Invitations to State Receptions.

33.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Taoiseach the names and addresses of the persons invited to the following State Receptions (a) for Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, (b) for Cardinal Agagianian and (c) for the 35th Variety Clubs International Convention.

It has never been the practice to publish the names and addresses of persons invited to official functions, and I do not propose to initiate such a practice now. Indeed, so far as I am aware, such a practice does not obtain in any other country.

Apart from the consideration just mentioned, the compilation and the printing of the names and the addresses asked for by the Deputy would involve an expenditure out of all proportion to any legitimate purpose which such publication could serve; the total number of persons invited to the three functions to which the Deputy refers was approximately 4,800. The Deputy will, no doubt, appreciate that the basis on which the invitation list for a particular function is drawn up is determined by the nature of the function itself.
