Vol. 195 No. 11

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take No. 4—Votes 48 and 30 to 38, inclusive, and 8, 9 and 10. Questions will be taken at 3 p.m.

May I ask the Taoiseach about the programme of legislation? Apart from No. 1, the Transport Bill, I know that there is a Housing Bill that must be passed in this session. I do not know what the intention of the Government is with regard to the Intoxicating Liquor Bill. We are now arriving at the end of May and the position is unsatisfactory for this time of the session. I would ask the Taoiseach to arrange that he will be in a position to give a further indication in relation to business for the remainder of the session at a very early date.

Yes; I shall endeavour to let the House know in the first week of June what legislation we contemplate in the session.

That is only a fortnight away. What about next week?

That would be too soon. It could not be firm in the sense——

What will we discuss next week? Will the Intoxicating Liquor Bill be taken?

I think so but, as the Deputy knows, next week will be a short week and that may cause a complication.

That is not the only complication about the Liquor Bill. It is a long stretch.

Suppose the programme of legislation produced in the first week of June—the Taoiseach will remember I mentioned this matter last autumn —when we have all the financial business to finish and if Bills are to be properly considered——

I am afraid that is not true. We still have the Finance Bill to pass.

I know. We have all that business and if we have a programme of legislation put on top of us, it will mean we shall be here until the middle or end of August.

The Deputy will appreciate that my function as Taoiseach at this time is not to persuade Ministers that some of the measures they have in mind can be put back but rather to try to bring them forward. We must try to pass all the Bills that require to be passed in the session. At this stage, I could not give a final list of such measures but I hope to be able to do so in the first week in June.

It would be better if we could get it earlier.
