Vol. 196 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South Tipperary County Council Strike.

50.

Mr. P. Hogan

(South Tipperary) and Mr. T. Dunne asked the Minister for Local Government if he is prepared to take powers to enable him to terminate the County Council strike in Tipperary (S.R.).

The answer is "No". As I indicated last week in replies to Deputies Kyne and Treacy, there is already adequate machinery available to both parties to secure independent consideration of the matters in dispute.

(South Tipperary): Is the Minister aware that that strike arose because of the manager's demand for extra working hours, a demand which he said would never be implemented? That kind of demand is illogical and has the Minister any function to intervene in a matter of that kind particularly where the strike seemed to have been provoked?

I have no power to intervene even if I wished to intervene and to take that power would require legislation which I do not think the situation warrants.
