Vol. 196 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Liquid Milk Processing.

19.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the cut-throat competition between liquid milk processing companies in the Midlands; and what steps he proposes to take to protect the interests of the milk producers.

20.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that milk purchased at creamery prices in the Midlands is being processed and sold at prices below those normally charged for processed milk; and if he can take any steps to protect the interests of producers against such practices.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 19 and 20 together.

There is no official control over the prices payable to producers for milk for liquid consumption outside the Dublin and Cork Sale areas. Creameries are required to comply with the same regulations as private pasteurisers in relation to milk for the liquid trade and to ensure an adequate output of milk during the winter period all pasteurisers must necessarily pay a price above the normal creamery price for milk. It is, therefore, a matter for each concern to pay to its suppliers a price that will secure an assured supply.
