Vol. 196 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kells (Meath) Industries.

29.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is no industrial activity in Kells, County Meath, although the people are very willing to co-operate so as to create much-needed employment in the district.

I am not aware that there is no industrial activity in Kells. Apart from some small industrial undertaking, there is one sizeable factory in the town.

As the Deputy is aware, the Government has provided valuable facilities and incentives to encourage the establishment and development of industries. It is for private enterprise to take advantage of these facilities and local interests should do their best to encourage private enterprise to set up industries in their areas. The Deputy may take it that any sound proposals that may be formulated by local or other interests for the establishment of industries in the Kells area to supplement the amount of employment already provided by existing industries will be sympathetically considered.

Would the Minister consider North Meath for inclusion in the undeveloped areas so as to promote industry in the district?

That is a separate matter.

I would not propose to do that.

The Minister for Agriculture will have your life in a minute.
