Vol. 196 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Housing Shortage.

50.

Mr. Browne

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that there is a grave shortage of houses in Ballina and Crossmolina, County Mayo; and if he will arrange with both the local and urban authorities concerned for the provision of the extra houses required.

The assessment of housing need and the initiation of proposals for the provision of local authority houses are functions of the local housing authorities concerned. There are no proposals at present before my Department for the provision of further houses in either Ballina or Crossmolina. If the housing authorities for the areas concerned, or for any other areas, are satisfied that the provision of further houses is necessary under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts or under the Labourers Acts, they are assured of every encouragement from me and of the administrative, technical and financial co-operation of my Department.
