Vol. 196 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax of Ships' Radio Officers.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that there is great resentment among ships' radio officers of Irish nationality at the failure of the Irish income tax authorities to reply to letters regarding their tax and at the prolonged delay in making refunds of tax overpaid; whether he will investigate this matter; and whether he will investigate in particular in the case of a person (name supplied) why letters by him to the Dublin General District of 4th and 28th April have not been replied to, why he was informed that he was entitled to a certain tax free allowance although he had not received an appropriate form for completion, and why refunds due to him since 1961-62 have not yet been paid to him.

I have made inquiries into the matter referred to by the Deputy and am satisfied that the implication in the first part of the question is not justified.

As to the particular case to which the Deputy refers the position is that a reply covering all points raised by the taxpayer was issued by the Inspector of Taxes on 2nd May, 1962. A Pay Order for the amount of the tax overpaid in 1961-62 was issued on 3rd May, 1962. The Pay Order was subsequently cashed in Hong Kong and was cleared in Dublin on 20th June, 1962.
