Vol. 196 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - American Tariff Reductions.

17.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is as yet certain that the recent American tariff reductions negotiated under the aegis of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade will be extended to benefit this country; and, if so, what classes of Irish exports to the United States will be affected.

Under the 1950 Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between Ireland and the United States of America the USA grants most favoured nation treatment to this country and it may be assumed that the tariff concessions negotiated by the USA at GATT will apply to this country. The list of tariff concessions is a very extensive one. For an assessment of its probable effects on the prospects of Irish exports to the USA, I would refer the Deputy to an article in the current issue of the Exporters Review published by Córas Tráchtala which was mailed to Deputies last week.
