asked the Minister for Social Welfare the increases in non-contributory social benefits in each of the past twelve years.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

INCREASES IN THE RATES OF NON-CONTRIBUTORY OLD AGE AND BLIND PENSION, UNEMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE, WIDOWS' AND ORPHANS' NON-CONTRIBUTORY PENSIONS AND CHILDREN'S ALLOWANCES IN THE YEARS 1950 TO 1961 INCLUSIVE.

Prior to the coming into operation of this Act payment of an allowance was made for each qualified child. This Act restricted payment to the first two qualified children.

Social Welfare (Children's Allowances) Act, 1952.

Prior to 1/7/1952 payment of children's allowances was restricted to each qualified child in excess of 2 qualified children in the family. Under this Act provision was made for the payment of 11s. 0d. a month in respect of the 2nd qualified child and the other monthly rates were increased by 6s. 6d.
