Vol. 196 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Commonage.

32.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that a non-national landowner recently erected a paling with a barbed wire top enclosing one quarter acre or thereabouts of commonage at Bealgal, Maharees, Castlegregory, County Kerry, thereby excluding a large number of persons from a favourite bathing and camping site used by them hitherto; and, if so, if he will take steps to make these bathing and camping facilities once again available to all visitors.

This question refers to a commonage of over 700 acres which has a long frontage to the sea-shore. All the commonage shares have been vested in tenant-purchasers under the Land Acts.

I understand that a caravan was parked within the commonage boundary by an English visitor and that a very small area around the caravan was temporarily fenced to prevent damage by stock.

It is difficult to see how such limited enclosure could have seriously interfered with customary access to the seashore or camping facilities.
