Vol. 196 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grading and Marketing of Irish Tomatoes.

9.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he has received a request from either RGDATA or the Irish Tomato Grower's Association for an investigation into the grading and marketing of Irish tomatoes; and if in view of allegations that separate grades are being mixed at market level he will have a full scale investigation carried out immediately.

I have received such a request. While some tomato growers grade their produce there is no compulsory grading system in operation and in the circumstances I do not see that any useful purpose would be served by an investigation. Officials of my Department are however having consultations with the growers' Association on the question of the grading and packaging of tomatoes in the light of Common Market requirements.
