Vol. 196 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Plasterboard.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if as indicated in a reply of 23rd April, 1958, it is the intention of Plaster and Gypsum Limited and Weatherwell Limited to undertake plasterboard manufacture at Greenore, County Louth; and, if so, when.

I understand that the Companies referred to by the Deputy have not abandoned their intention to manufacture plasterboard at Greenore, County Louth.

Is the Minister aware that, in the reply given in 1958, it was indicated that this manufacture would be transferred to Greenore? We have been waiting four years. There is gross unemployment in the area.

I always like to leave it to the industrialist himself to decide the opportune moment to start an industry.

I would point out that these people received a guaranteed loan of £83,000 for that purpose. The insistence to start immediately at Greenore was waived by the Minister's predecessor.

I think there was the question of the port, apart altogether from the industry.

If the Minister will go to the Dáil Library, he will find that what I say is true.
