Vol. 196 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bottled Gas Subsidy.

43.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether a subsidy in respect of bottled gas will be paid to those people who have already installed this system of heating and lighting owing to the exorbitant fixed charges quoted for the connection and installation of an ESB supply.

A subsidy of £10 will be paid to enable bottled gas to be installed in those houses which had neither electricity nor bottled gas on 17th April, 1962, and which could now be connected for electricity only on the basis of special service charges of more than 100 per cent. of the appropriate normal fixed charge.

It is not correct to describe the fixed charges as exorbitant. They represent far less than the actual cost of connection, the balance being met by the State and from the loss on rural revenue account.
