Vol. 196 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of Laois Estate.

54.

asked the Minister for Lands if the land Commission will consider the propriety of acquiring for division the remainder of the Hamilton Estate at Roundwood, Mountrath, County Laois, which is on the public market and consists of over two hundred acres; if he is aware that great local congestion exists in this area; and if steps can be taken to have this holding purchased for the many local deserving applicants who have to pay large sums for conacre each year and whose holdings are not large enough to give them a reasonable standard of living.

The Land Commission acquired 242 acres from this owner last year and I understand that enquiries are at present being made by the Land Commission in respect of the residual area referred to, which comprises some 230 acres.
