Vol. 196 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruiting for British Army.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware that a number of agents are actively engaged in Dublin in recruiting young men for the British Army Reserve, that in some Dublin firms special facilities are granted to such recruiting agents, and that additional holidays are granted to those who join; and, if so, if it is proposed to take any action in the matter.

I am not aware of any activity such as the Deputy describes.

Section 312 of the Defence Act, 1954, makes it an offence, punishable by fine and/or imprisonment, to induce, procure or persuade any person to accept or agree to accept any commission or engagement in any military, naval or air force maintained by the Government of any other State.

If the Taoiseach is made aware that such things are taking place, will he take action against the persons concerned?

If evidence is supplied to me that will stand up in court, prosecution will follow.
