Vol. 196 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Banking and Credit System.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance if in view of the possible entry of this country into the EEC he will consider taking steps to have a complete examination of the existing banking and credit system carried out, and in particular to have examined the desirability of (a) extending the powers of the Central Bank and (b) instituting effective control by nationalisation or otherwise over the credit and investment policies of the banking system.

I do not consider it necessary to take any such action as that suggested and my view is that nationalisation or any measure to institute similar control over the banks' credit and investment policies would be contrary to the public interest.
