Vol. 196 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Common Market Languages.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what facilities or inducements are available to the personnel of his Department to enable them to acquire a knowledge of Common Market languages.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by the Minister for Finance to a question on this subject in Dáil Éireann on 19th July, 1962.

These facilities are given for French only. Does the Minister not appreciate that it is desirable that other languages should receive the same facilities?

I agree it is desirable.

Would the Minister do something about it?

The decision was to provide facilities for French at this point. Whether they will be extended later is another matter.

Even in a little matter like this, the boys are not allowed to speak without "Daddy" coming into the debate.

This is a matter that concerns a number of Departments.
