asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in expansion of a reply of 19th July, 1962, in respect of 1961-62 the estimated subsidy (1) per taxed vehicle and (2) per mile of road from (a) local rates, (b) the Road Fund and (c) the Exchequer, and the total subsidy under each heading.

The amount provided by road authorities out of local rates for expenditure on road works in 1961-62 was equivalent to £15.216 per taxed vehicle, or £96.415 per mile of public road. The aggregate of Road Fund Grant allocations to road authorities out of the proceeds of motor taxation, licence fees, etc., was equivalent to £20.288 per taxed vehicle, or £128.552 per mile of public road.

The amount allocated to the Road Fund from the Exchequer was equivalent to £1.684 per taxed vehicle or £10.669 per mile of public road.

The total of the foregoing is £37.188 per taxed vehicle or £235.636 per mile of public road.
