The information requested is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report. The figures were compiled mainly from annual returns furnished by the local authorities concerned and in consultation with the county councils.
In the case of Kildare the mileage of county roads maintained by the county council increased by 11.8 since 1st April, 1935. (The discrepancy between this figure and that given under the same heading in reply to Question No. 3 of 13th June, 1962, is due to the correction by the county council of provisional figures previously furnished of the mileage of county roads maintained at 31st March, 1962.) However, the figures show a decrease of 13.2 miles between 1934/35 and 1935/36 and of 16.5 miles between 1943/44 and 1944/45, so that the gross aggregate of the yearly increases over the period in the mileage of county road maintained was 41.5 miles.
That was because certain county roads were classified as main roads. Was that not it?
I am not quite clear on that myself at this stage.
