Vol. 196 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilkenny Circuit Court Stenographer.

34.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice why there was no official stenographer available at Kilkenny circuit court on the hearing of a man-slaughter charge on 10th July, 1962; and if steps will be taken to avoid a like occurrence in future.

I have ascertained that on 10th July the free-lance stenographer who is regularly employed in the Kilkenny Circuit Court sessions was not available, and that, at short notice, no other stenographer could be found to replace him. As a consequence, recourse was then had to the services of a local shorthandtypist, as is sometimes done in such circumstances, but on the remaining days, from 11th to 13th July, a stenographer was in attendance.

Arrangements have been made for increasing the permanent staff of stenographers in the circuit courts and it is thought that it is most unlikely that there will be any further cause for complaint.
