Vol. 196 No. 19

Committee on Finance. - Restriction of Imports Bill, 1962.— From the Seanad.

The Dáil went into Committee to consider an amendment from the Seanad.

I move that the Committee agree with the Seanad in amendment No. 1:—

Section 2.

"or territory" inserted after "country" in the four places where "country" occurs in subsections (1) and (2).

This amendment was accepted in the Seanad. The purpose of the amendment is to remove any doubt as to the application of the Bill to areas not recognised by this country as accepted States. It might be held that the making of an Order in relation to such an area under an Act which referred to "countries" might imply some measure of recognition for that area as a separate State. On the other hand, it might be held that the Government had no power to make an Order in relation to an area not recognised as a separate State. This amendment will remove any such doubts.

We are agreeable to the amendment.
