Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Police Dogs.

172.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Justice where police dogs are obtained; what is their breed; by whom they are trained; and the general nature of their training.

The Garda Síochána have six police dogs — all Alsatians. Four of them were obtained through the Birmingham Police and two were obtained in Dublin.

Each dog underwent an intensive course of training, with his handler, of approximately 16 weeks' duration.

Each dog is trained to obey its handler and to act with him as a team in the execution of his duties.
