Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishermen's Unemployment Assistance Claims.

86.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if it has been decided that the income of fishermen should be taken into account in assessing the means of applicants for unemployment assistance, and, if so, why.

In accordance with the provisions of the Unemployment Assistance Acts, fishermen who work for an employer and receive wages or other remuneration have never been assessed with means in respect of such employment. In accordance with these provisions also, fishermen who are not employed under a contract of service have always had to be assessed with their net profits in the same way as other self-employed persons. No change in the relevant statutory provisions has been made.
