Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation in West of Ireland.

109.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Lands whether it is proposed to embark on an intensified programme of afforestation in the West; and when plans for this are likely to be put into effect.

There has been in recent years a rapid increase in the rate of afforestation in the West and almost half of the country's total planting programme is now being undertaken in the Western counties.

Work which is in hands on the acquisition of land should ensure that the rate of acquisition and planting in the West will continue to increase and in time the great bulk of our forest areas will lie west of the Shannon.
