Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC: Changes in Fishing Industry.

111.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Lands whether membership of the EEC will involve any changes in the fishing industry, such as a removal of the limit on Irish coastal waters.

Membership of the EEC affects trade in fishery products by progressively reducing restrictions among members and adjusting duties on imports from other countries towards a common external tariff. The members have not so far given effect to their intention of formulating a common policy for fisheries. While the implications of the right of establishment in regard to fishing remain to be clarified, there are no grounds for concluding that membership would involve removal of our exclusive fishery limits.
