Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Estate Duty on Savings.

113.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if in view of the fact that no estate duty is now payable on estates of less than £5,000 he will extend the limit of £100 in respect of which a formal grant of probate or letters of administration is required for Savings Certificates and the Post Office Savings Bank.

Not at present. Under the existing limit, the number of claims investigated annually exceeds a thousand. Any substantial extension would, because of the larger amounts involved and the greater risk of disputes as a result, impose on my Department very considerable additional work. So far as the Post Office Savings Bank is concerned, amending legislation would appear to be necessary.
