Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Royalties on Works of George Bernard Shaw.

130.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of expenditure of the moneys received in respect of the royalties of the works of George Bernard Shaw.

The expenditure of the moneys of the Shaw Bequest up to 31st August, 1962, was as follows:—

Purchase of paintings: £129,474 12s.; Restoration of works of art: £527 8s. 8d.; Irish Government securities purchased (nominal value): £330,000.

131.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the total amount received to date from the royalties of the works of George Bernard Shaw and, specifically, the amount received from royalties of My Fair Lady.

The total net monetary benefit to the National Gallery of Ireland from the Shaw Bequest up to 31st August, 1962, was £461,061 6s. 5d.

It is not possible to specify the amount received from royalties on the musical play My Fair Lady, as the returns show the amount accruing to the estate through the Society of Authors, which is responsible to the Public Trustee, London, but do not show the separate amounts accruing from the performance of individual works.

Does that cover the amount for the film rights or has that to come?

I have not got that information.

It is the total receipts.

It is the total receipts from the Public Trustees in London. It does not specify.
