Vol. 197 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Maam Cross (Galway) Road Work.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) what road work has been done by his Department on the old rail line at Maam Cross, County Galway, (b) the amount of public money involved, and (c) if this section of the road can be used by the general public.

The old railway track at Maam Cross was repaired from the county road, Lurgan, opposite Miss Nancy Kelly's house east by the disused railway station for a distance of 756 perches to the rock outcrop.

Full-cost State grants totalling £1,500 were authorised for the work, i.e. £575 in 1957 and £925 in 1958. These grants were sanctioned by the Department of Transport and Power to facilitate the production of turf for the generating station at Screebe, and the works were carried out by the Special Employment Schemes Office as agents for that Department.

I am not in a position to state authoritatively whether there is a right-of-way over the track for the general public.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary say that he is not prepared to state that there is a right-of way and public money has been expended?

The Deputy is aware that the latter part of his question refers to a matter that is sub judice at the moment and I do not want to comment further on it.
