Vol. 197 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suspension of Nuclear Tests.

13.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether in the Political Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations Ireland voted for the resolution sponsored by the United States and Britain concerning the suspension of nuclear tests, or the resolution sponsored by thirty-seven other countries; and if he will state the reasons for Ireland's vote.

Ireland voted for both the resolutions to which the Deputy refers on the grounds that nuclear testing is a danger to humanity because of radioactive fall-out and accentuates the arms race. Our position in this matter was explained by the Minister in his statements to the First Committee of the General Assembly on 11th October and 1st November, copies of which have been placed in the library.
