Vol. 197 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Design Defects.

31.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what steps, if any, have been taken by Córas Tráchtála Teoranta since the publication of the Scandinavian Report, which adversely criticised the level of design in Ireland, to remedy the many defects referred to.

Córas Tráchtála have introduced a number of schemes with the object of raising the standard of industrial design. Grants are now available towards the cost of employing designers and of training Irish designers abroad. Grants are also payable in the case of study visits made by Irish designers to foreign countries. In addition, expert advice on design policy is made available to Irish firms at a nominal fee.

Córas Tráchtála have already sponsored several design exhibitions, and plans for further exhibitions are at an advanced stage.

Will the Minister show that to the Minister for Education?

I do not have to. I am in close contact with the Minister for Education. In fact, we are in close consultation about another issue in regard to this at the moment.
