Vol. 197 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wicklow Sub-Post Offices.

45.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what vacancies for sub-post offices exist in the County of Wicklow at present.

There are vacancies for subpostmasters at Annamoe and Aughrim, County Wicklow at present.

46.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what vacancies for sub-post offices fell due and were filled in the County of Wicklow in the past two years; and what procedure was adopted in filling such vacancies.

In the past two years sub-post office vacancies occurred and were filled in Ballycooge, Coolboy and Clash, County Wicklow. The suboffice at Clash became vacant and was filled on two occasions. The usual procedure for filling sub-postmaster vacancies was followed in these cases. They were advertised locally, the candidates were interviewed and the premises offered by them inspected by the local postmaster who furnished reports to headquarters. In one case there was only one candidate and he was appointed. In the other cases the postmaster's report and the applications were examined by a selection board consisting of senior officers of my Department. In each case the selection board recommended not more than three candidates as suitable for appointment and I appointed one of the candidates recommended by the Board.
